Other details :  One of several papers from Xiang's PhD demonstrating a new simple technique, bringing melts to equilibrium at three different temperatures, for a detailed investigation of redox equilibria without extensive chemical determination of all the valence states and showing that pairs of elements interact as expected but groups of 3 elements interact simultaneously, not sequentially, as in aqueous chemistry.

Other details :  Liquidus temperature is not a smooth function of glass composition and not amenable to interpretation by simple linear regression analysis. One day it will be possible to do these calculations by chemical thermodynamic methods but data are lacking at present. The statistical model presented is the best available for an important region of this 10 component system. A notable exercise in international cooperation: Backman and Karlsson are from Abo Akademi, Finland; Pennington an RA in Sheffield. The project was supported by Philips (Eindhoven) and St Gobain (Paris).

Other details :  Detailed extended investigation of the chemical durability of a new family of alkali-free glasses in strongly alkaline solutions. Experiments ran for up to 300 days. These glasses performed better than any others previously used for making glass fibre-reinforced cement products.
