Nearly all members of the department have had at least one such invitation in the period 1994-2000; most have had several; D.Taylor and Vinzent have had ten each, and McLeod, Nielsen and Ustorf eight each. Among many examples:

Anderson gave the Henry Martyn Research Lecture, Cambridge 2000; Goodacre’s website, ‘The New Testament Gateway’ won the Digital Librarian’s Award in 1999; Kilby gave the Gifford Research lectures, St Andrews 1995-6; Lartey gave the Fernley Hartley lecture at the Methodist Conference 1998; McLeod was a Visiting Professor at the University of Uppsala 2000, and was a member of the committee appointed by the Minerva Foundation to report on the work of the Taubes-Minerva Research Centre at Bar-Ilan University 1999; Nielsen was a Visiting Professor at the University of Copenhagen 2000, and is a consultant to the project on ‘The significance of religion in the encounter of cultures in Denmark’, based at the University of Copenhagen; Norton gave the Donnellan Lecture, Dublin 1994, and the Fisher Lectures, Cambridge 1996; Parker gave the Carmichael Walling Lectures, Abilene, Texas 1998; Schmid received the Hendrik Kasimir-Karl Ziegler research prize of the Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften 1998; Stringer is a consultant to the ‘Religion in the Chicago Area’ project based at the University of Illinois; D.Taylor is a member of the committee advising the Archbishop of Canterbury on Oriental Orthodox Churches; Vinzent was member of the GCS of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften 1995-7; Wollaston was Koerner fellow at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies 1995-6; Young gave the Croall Lectures, Edinburgh 1998 and the St Augustine Lecture, Villanova 1998.
Goodacre is on the co-ordinating committee of the Synoptics section of the Society for Biblical Literature; Kilby was on the committee of the Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain 1996-7; Kirk is treasurer and a committee member of the International Association of Mission Studies, and an international board member of the Life and Peace Institute, Uppsala; Lartey is president of the International Council for Pastoral Care and Coumnselling, chair of the British and Irish Association for Practical Theology, vice-president of the Association for Spiritual and Pastoral Care and Counselling, and treasurer of the International Academy for Patoral Counselling, and of the African Association for Pastoral Studies and Counselling; McLeod is a member of the Bureau of the Commission Internationale d’Histoire Ecclésiastique Comparée and president of the British Sub-Commission, and is on the committee of the Ecclesiastical History Society; Nielsen is on the council of the British Society of Middle East Studies, the board of directors of the International Center for Minority Studies and Inter-Cultural relations, and the board of the International Dialogues Foundation; Norton is on the executive committee of the Catholic Biblical Association of Great Britain and was secretary of the consultative committee on Biblical and Near Eastern Studies of the Royal Irish Academy (1994-9); Sugirtharajah is co-chair of the Bible in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean Group of the Society for Biblical Literature; Surty is a member of the faculty of the International Institute of Islamic Medicine and the Islamic Medical Association of North America; D.Taylor is advisor on a project to digitalise a Syriac reference library with Brigham Young University, Utah; Vinzent was one of two officers of the Association International des Etudes Patristiques selected to monitor the presidental elections in 1999-2000; he is member of the European Academy of Science and Humanities, Vienna; Wollaston is an Honorary Fellow of the Centre for Jewish Studies, University of Manchester, is on the Academic Advisory Board of the Centre for Jewish-Christian Relations, Cambridge, and the Steering Committee of the Religion, Holocaust and Genocide Group of the American Academy of Religion, and was on the Executive Committee of the British Association of Jewish Studies (1994-7).
