Dowden is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and is a Chartered Physicist. He has been a member of Editorial Board of the Journal of Laser Applications.
He was invited to contribute to a special session at the International Convention on Electro-Optics and Lasers '99 (Orlando, USA, 1999) marking the occasion of the retirement of Prof. W.M. Steen of Liverpool University. He was also invited (as a non-member) to attend the annual congress of the International Institute of Welding (Florence, 2000) and present to it two papers on mathematical modelling of laser welding. He has received Royal Society travel grants on four occasions in the period of the exercise (and others prior to it) to attend the annual conference of the Laser Institute of America (Int. Congress on the Applications of Lasers and Electro-Optics) in the USA. He has been invited to present a paper at the Joining of Materials Conference, JOM-10, in Helsingør (May 2001).
He has reviewed for a number of British and American journals including the Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, Journal of Engineering Manufacture, Electronics Letters. Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, Inverse Problems, Journal of Laser Applications and the Journal of Applied Physics.
He reviews grant proposals for the EPSRC and is a member of its Peer Review College for 2000-2002. He has reviewed proposals for the Leverhulme Trust and the Nuffield Foundation. He accepted an invitation to become an external evaluator for Enterprise Ireland (an Irish government agency that funds research programmes). He has also reviewed for the US National Science Foundation.
He has acted as an external PhD examiner for Heriot-Watt and Liverpool Universities in Britain and the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
