Other relevant details: This article applies innovative thinking in Multimodal Communication to aspects of layout and the visual construction of genre in a range of document types. It takes aspects of what is a major new theory of communication and turns this semiotic view of communication processes into a model for the analysis of layout from the point of view of rhetorical structure and addresses how visuals serve specific communication goals. This article is innovative in that it uses empirical methods derived from multimodal theory. In the first instance, a corpus has been developed for the purposes of analysis. This was the annotated in order to analyse the different visual components of the texts in question and finally a schema was applied to the corpus. This analysis points the way to future developments in the modelling of texts from the point of view of their visual rather than linguistic structure. It indicates ways in which multimodal texts can be generated automatically and in particular the way that layout can be generated using specific principles of genre. Allen’s contribution was considerable as this article grew out of a conference contribution by him. In terms of the substance of the article Allen contributed to all stages of its production, from developing the initial empirical and experimental work, to writing, editing and preparing the article for submission.

Other relevant details: This conference contribution was one of the outputs from the TRIP Project. This brought together general approaches to publishing and document design from a range of perspective. The intention here is to analyse the many different possible outputs for texts, from print, through screen, to hypertext. In addition it addresses the problem of hypertext being delivered onto many possible display devices. This conference contribution sets out in more general terms than above (output 1) a complete research strategy that integrates many areas of interest, including the foundation of new ideas that contribute to theories of multimodality; applications of framing to new media and innovative forms of electronic publishing; the development of real-world applications; and contributions to the debate on the effective design of content for a range of media platforms.

Other relevant details: This book chapter indicates a further application of theories of multimodal communication applied to naturally occurring text, in this instance to documentary film making. Instead of producing a model of genre the intention here was to perform a descriptive analysis of composition in the documentary form as a whole and applied to a specific film, Godfrey Reggio’s Koyanisquatsi. The analysis here was intended to establish further low-level spatial attributes that could be applied to visual and multimodal texts. Framing is a particularly powerful yet often transparent feature of multimodal texts and this chapter was an attempt to develop a rigorous application of many aspects of composition to the critical analysis of film. This is another natural progression from the previous publication as the intention here was to embed the use of framing as a technique in the construction of multimodal texts, such as film, within the critical discourse of representation in film. In doing so the chapter draws from many different ‘flavours’ of semiotic theory, from theories of visual design, linguistics, and theories of ‘spectacle’. This book chapter is one of the first extended applications of framing from the perspective of multimodality to the documentary film genre. It also brings together important critical approaches to film into a unified theory of representation in the documentary form.

Other relevant details: This output represents Allen's contribution to the Bradford Grid exhibition at Bradford Gallery 2 (30 July - 03 September 2006). Bradford Grid is a project sponsored by the Arts Council for England (ACE) and aims to find innovative ways of documenting photographically Bradford's rapidly changing urban landscape. The physical outputs here represent the catalogue for that exhibition and an early version of a book produced by the project. Allen's work is documented in both. All of the previous ouputs rest on the representation of space at different levels of granularity. At the very baseline it is only through the visual representation of space itself that informed judgements can be made about the representation of space, whether this is descriptive or performative in nature. Therefore, practice-based approaches to the representation of space - through photography and digital imaging – are an integral and necessary aspect to this researcher’s way of working and constitute a central part of his output. The exhibition work represented in this output is part of a significant archive documenting the visual and spatial aspects of the urban environment. This work, as a creative manifestation of the researcher’s output, is by its very nature multimodal and is both a contribution to the analysis of urban space from a distinctly multimodal perspective; it is also a departure away from it. Whilst the visual analysis of urban space fits very neatly into the multimodal perspective it is also something of an innovation in terms of the use of digital technologies in recording an ever increasingly technologized urban landscape. The longitudinal nature of this work means that transformations in the urban environment can be recorded and analysed and ultimately fed into an approach to the built environment as a visual and multimodal text.
